A Pragmatist Explanation of Technical Capabilities in Nonhuman Animals

Human technological capabilities have been analyzed as a distinctive feature of the species. However, recent discoveries in field ethology show that other species besides humans are also able to use and make tools. Ihde Malafouris (2019) suggested analyzing nonhuman animals’ technical using an enactivist framework, they do for humans. This paper explores pragmatist approach, combining gradual evolutionary continuity with enactivism. I will characterize capacities John Dewey’s notions experience, problematic situation, accommodation, adaptation, inquiry. The animals better explained non-dichotomic fashion, avoiding anthropocentric explanations.
